France says it will not recognize North Korea as a nuclear state.

French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero told reporters that France is urging North Korea to comply with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) as a nonnuclear state.

The comment comes prior to the NPT Review Conference to be held at U.N. headquarters in New York in May.

North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that it would participate in denuclearization efforts on the precondition that it is given equal footing with other nuclear states.

The U.S. has continuously refused to recognize the North as a nuclear power.
