Chinese tourism to North Korea appears to have resumed.

Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in China says local authorities recently allowed, on a trial basis, the issuance of tourist passes to North Korea.

An official from the prefecture says that although the move is on a trial basis, the measure points to a resumption of tours.

Yanbian authorities on Tuesday announced steps to strengthen oversight on 30 local travel agencies to ensure the safety of tours to the North.

China banned in 2005 the issuance of travel passes to prevent Yanbian citizens from visiting the North to gamble. It banned all group tours from Yanbian to the North the following year.
