Japan’s Kyodo News says South Korea, China, Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have agreed to establish an emergency rice reserve.

According to the report Friday, a total of 787-thousand tons of rice will be included in the reserve, with pledges of 300-thousand tons from China, 250-thousand tons from Japan, 150-thousand tons from South Korea and 87-thousand tons from ASEAN member countries.

The report said the rice will be stored in their respective countries for use as an emergency reserve for the Southeast Asian region.

The agriculture ministers of the 13 countries will sign an official agreement on the matter when they meet in October for a gathering in Cambodia.
