The U.S. State Department says it will not draw any conclusions regarding the six-party nuclear talks until the South Korean investigation into the sinking of the “Cheonan” naval vessel is complete.
State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told a regular news briefing Wednesday that the U.S. is aware of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s ongoing visit to China and that the U.S. has shared its views with China in anticipation of meetings expected to be held between Kim and high-level Beijing officials.
Kim reportedly conveyed Wednesday during a meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao North Korea’s intention to return to the six-way nuclear talks.
Crowley said that Washington is fully supportive of South Korea’s investigation into the Cheonan incident and that when it is completed, Washington will draw conclusions that will have potential implications.
He also urged North Korea to live up to its obligations, meet its commitments and cease its provocative behavior.
North Korea is suspected of having perpetrated the sinking of the Cheonan.
