Bosworth: US Committed to Diplomacy, Dialogue

U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy Stephen Bosworth has stressed that the U.S. remains committed to diplomacy and dialogue in regards to the “Cheonan” naval incident.

During a seminar in Washington Thursday, Bosworth said the U.S. is focused on supporting Seoul in its investigations into the sinking of the Navy warship.

He said the U.S. is also waiting to hear from Beijing on what topics were discussed during North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s recent visit to China.

He said it is premature to speculate about the possible positions related countries might take in the long term in regards to the naval incident.

Asked about the possible impact the Cheonan probe might have on the future reopening of the six-way nuclear talks, Bosworth said he is not going to answer hypothetical questions.

Bosworth’s comments came shortly after top U.S. nuclear negotiator Sung Kim said that even if the North declares its return to the nuclear talks, the multilateral dialogue will not resume until the probe on the Cheonan is completed.
