US Urges Myanmar to Respect UN Resolution on NK Weapons

The U.S. is urging Myanmar to respect a U.N. resolution that bans weapons purchases from North Korea.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said during a visit to Myanmar over the weekend that it is doubtful whether Myanmar leaders are abiding by U.N. Security Council resolution 1874, which sanctions Pyongyang for the development and proliferation of weapons.

Campbell called on the Myanmar government to declare through clear procedures that it is adhering to such international obligations.

He warned that Washington maintains the right to take independent action within the relevant frameworks established by the international community if Myanmar fails to meet the obligations.

The United States suspects a North Korean cargo ship that made a five-day port call in Myanmar last month may be related to weapons exports.
