Vice ministerial-level foreign affairs and defense officials of South Korea and the U.S. will hold talks in Washington on Friday to discuss the sinking of South Korea’s “Cheonan” warship and other security matters.
A U.S. State Department official says he can’t speak about the detailed agenda but he believes security concerns including North Korea will be discussed. Seoul and Washington are expected to coordinate stances on the sinking of “Cheonan.”
The official said the U.S. is involved in and is providing full support for South Korea’s investigation into the cause of the incident. Seoul is expected to announce the probe results around Thursday.
The U.S. official also said the Washington meeting will touch on a bilateral defense issue that needs adjusting.
Those participating in the meeting include South Korea’s Deputy Foreign Minister Lee Yong-joon and Deputy Defense Minister for Policy Chang Kwang-il and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Assistant Secretary of Defense Wallace Gregson.
