US Senate Passes Resolution on Cheonan Incident

The U.S. Senate has unanimously adopted a bipartisan resolution on the sinking of South Korea’s “Cheonan” ship.

The resolution that was passed during a plenary session on Friday expressed condolences to the bereaved families of the victims of the naval incident as well as the Korean people.
The resolution, made up of six clauses, also reaffirmed the South Korea-U.S. alliance while urging Washington to fully support Seoul on handling the Cheonan case.

In particular, it called for the effective implementation of U.S. sanctions against North Korea, although it did not specifically blame the communist state for involvement in the naval disaster amid speculation that Pyongyang was behind the sinking of the ship.

The resolution was drawn up by Independent Senator Joseph Lieberman and was signed by Democratic Senator John Kerry and Republican Senator John McCain, among others.
