The U.S. is criticizing North Korea for sinking the South Korean naval vessel “Cheonan.”
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said in a statement that the North’s attack on the South Korean naval ship is an intolerable act that disregards international law. He denounced the North for violating the Korean War armistice and for threatening international peace and stability.
The White House said that an international team’s probe presents objective and scientific evidence that the sinking of the “Cheonan” was caused by a North Korean torpedo.
The U.S. urged the communist North to realize that its belligerent behavior will only serve to deepen its isolation from the international community.
The White House added that U.S. President Barack Obama expressed his deep condolences over the death of 46 South Korean sailors in the incident.
Obama also reaffirmed the U.S.’ strong support for South Korea in a phone conversation with President Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday.
