UN Chief, Canada, France Condemn NK Attack

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has voiced hope that the United Nations Security Council will respond promptly to the sinking of the “Cheonan” naval vessel.

Ban told a monthly regular news conference Monday that the North's attack runs counter to international efforts to promote peace and stability in the region, calling the attack "unacceptable."

Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper, meanwhile, expressed support for the Seoul government's probe results on the case and its punitive measures against the North.

In a statement, Harper promised a joint response by the international community, including U.N. Security Council sanctions, adding that Canada will seek additional sanctions in the trade and investment sectors.

France's Foreign Ministry also issued a statement condemning the North's attack and vowing to impose sanctions against the North through the UNSC.
