Gov't Not Seeking Another UN Sanctions Resolution

Vice Foreign Minister Chun Young-woo met with senior U.S. officials in Washington Tuesday to discuss international responses to North Korea's sinking of South Korea's Cheonan warship.

He met with Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg and Under Secretary of State William Burns for talks on taking the case to the United Nations Security Council.

Chun said their talks did not include discussions on pushing for another U.N. Security Council resolution seeking additional sanctions on the North. He said South Korea will seek a Security Council action that will send a political, symbolic and moral message.

Chun said what is more important is to send a message that the North's provocation will not be tolerated by the international community and Pyongyang will not be allowed to continue such military adventure.

He said relevant parties have yet to agree on the format and content of a U.N. Security Council action. He added that the government will decide when to send the Cheonan case to the United Nations after talks with members of the UNSC in New York.
