‘Japan Will Not Return More Cultural Assets’

Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada has reportedly said that Japan will not capitulate to South Korea’s demand that Tokyo return more of the cultural assets it took from the Korean Peninsula during the colonial era.

The Asahi Shimbun said Okada made the remarks in a Democratic Party of Japan policy meeting on Tuesday.

According to Ashai, he said that Japan will return only Joseon Dynasty royal ceremonial records to South Korea, in line with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s promise made in a statement issued this month on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Japan’s annexation of the Korean Peninsula.

The Japanese daily said the South Korean government is expecting Japan to return other cultural assets such as ancient royal documents.
