A leading French Daily has projected that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter’s North Korea visit will not produce significant policy results.
Le Figaro on Friday covered the story of Carter’s visit to the communist state, noting that the former president had yielded progress on North Korea’s nuclear issue in 1994, when he met with then North Korean leader Kim Il-sung. The article said Carter at the time had successfully carried out what some had called an impossible mission.
However, the daily added that 16 years have come to pass and tensions are running higher than ever between the North and the U.S. while the six-way nuclear talks remain at a stalemate. Le Figaro said the chances are Carter will not be able to realize a miracle this time.
The paper said that his visit is unlikely to reap any significant policy outcomes given that it’s mainly centered on the humanitarian issue of winning the release of Aijalon Gomes, who has been detained for eight months in the North for trespassing.
