Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has briefed Washington about the trip he made to North Korea last week to secure the release of an American detained in the communist country.
U.S. officials said Carter spoke about the details of his visit to Pyongyang with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday.
But Carter has yet to answer reporters’ questions about his trip.
Although the U.S. government said that Carter’s visit to North Korea was part of a private mission to bring back the American, the former U.S. president met with North Korean parliamentary leader Kim Yong-nam, who expressed willingness to resume the six-way nuclear talks.
Carter visited North Korea last week to bring home Aijalon Gomes.
The two arrived in the U.S. on August 28th.
Gomes, a 30-year-old teacher from Boston, was detained by the North on January 25th for entering the country illegally. He was sentenced to eight years of hard labor and fined 700-thousand dollars.
