The identity of a American soldier who went missing during the Korean War has been confirmed some 60 years later.

The U.S. Department of Defense POW and Missing Personnel Office announced on Wednesday that the remains of a U.S. serviceman excavated in 2004 have been identified as U.S. Army Sergeant Charles Whitler.

In November 1950, Whitler was captured and shot by North Korean soldiers during a battle in Unsan, North Pyongyan Province. He was buried near the area. In 2004, a joint U.S.-North Korean team excavated the remains.

U.S. experts conducted interviews with eyewitnesses to confirm how Whitler was captured and died. They used dental comparisons and DNA tests in the identification.
