Japan is expected to unveil on Friday of next week its annual defense white paper that will reportedly describe South Korea’s Dokdo islets as Japanese territory.

Japan’s Mainichi Shimbun said the military document will include a statement that claims Dokdo, which the Japanese refer to as “Takeshima,” is Japanese sovereign territory.

Just like last year’s paper, this year’s is also likely to include a statement recognizing that territorial disputes over the Dokdo islets and northern parts of Japan remain unresolved.

Tokyo was initially planning to reveal the white paper on July 30th but decided to push back its issuance due to concerns that the release of the document before August 29th could spark a diplomatic conflict with Seoul. August 29th marked the 100th anniversary of Japan’s forced annexation of Korea.

The delay also comes as Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan apologized on August tenth for Japan’s 35-year colonial rule of Korea.
