China’s Xinhua News says thousands of people gathered in Kim Il-sung Square in downtown Pyongyang on Sunday to make preparations for a celebratory event that will open on Thursday to mark the 62nd anniversary of North Korea’s founding.

The report said the North’s ruling party is expected to soon convene a meeting of top members for the first time in 44 years.

Xinhua said that North Korean media have recently released reports on the selection of provincial heads who will represent the provinces for the North’s ruling party.
