Kissinger: Collective Security Ideal Losing Ground

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger blames certain Asian countries for undermining the collective security ideal, saying this has caused no results for global nuclear diplomacy toward North Korea and Iran.

In a speech to a conference hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies Friday in Geneva, he said a decade of U.N.-backed negotiations on Pyongyang and Tehran has produced no significant results, calling it a method used by proliferators to gain time.

Kissinger says that if countries continue to put their national interests first, this trend will eventually force major powers to choose whether to live with more countries with nuclear weapons or take whatever further action is necessary to stop them.
