Public Citizen: FTA Does Not Increase Trade

The U.S. consumer advocacy organization “Public Citizen” is arguing that free trade agreements (FTA) do not help increase trade.

The New York Times quoted the report by Public Citizen and said that exports to nations with which the U.S. has no free trade agreements have grown faster than exports to nations with which the U.S. has signed free trade deals.

In particular, the newspaper said that when overall trade shrank due to the financial crisis, exports to countries with which the U.S. has free trade agreements shrank at a slightly higher rate than exports to other nations.
