Outgoing Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva says he will actively address the issue of foreign exchange rate disputes during the G20 summit in Seoul next week.
Lula said Wednesday in a joint news conference with President-elect Dilma Rousseff that the two will arrive at the G20 summit ready to take all necessary measures to make sure that Brazil’s continuously appreciating currency does not become overvalued.
Lula said the issue of foreign exchange rate disputes will also be a key issue for the new Brazilian government that will launch on January first of next year.
Lula said that he and Rousseff believe the U.S. and China are fueling exchange rate disputes and that protection for Brazilian companies from the damage that could result from the disputes is needed.
The Brazilian government has raised financial transaction taxes three times to block the appreciation of its currency.
