US Republicans Urge Added Pressure on NK

Republican lawmakers in the U.S. are calling on Washington to impose stronger pressure on North Korea following the release of a U.N. Security Council report that says the North has violated U.N. sanctions.

U.S. congressional newspaper “The Hill” said in its online edition that Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the incoming chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued a statement calling the U.N. report a wake-up call for the U.S. and other nations.

She said in the statement that rather than continuing its failed strategy of seeking to engage in what has proven to be endless negotiations with the North Korean regime, the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama should ratchet up pressure on Pyongyang.

Representative Pete Hoekstra, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, said in a statement that it is irresponsible for world powers to continue overlooking nuclear ambitions of North Korea and Iran, which he said pose threats to international stability.

He added that the Obama administration must speak forcefully about the risks and challenges of nuclear proliferation and push the U.N. toward forceful and necessary action to halt the spread of nuclear weapons.
