UN Envoy on NK Rights to Visit S.Korea Next Week

U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in North Korea Marzuki Darusman will visit South Korea next week for the first time since taking office in June of this year.

During his stay, Darusman will meet with Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan and Unification Minister Hyun In-taek. He will also visit Hanawon, a special government-run facility for North Korean escapees.

Prior to taking over the post at the U.N., Darusman served as the minister of justice for Indonesia and as a working group cochairman for the ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism.

He became the new rapporteur earlier this year, replacing Vitit Muntarbhorn from Thailand.

Created in 2004, the special U.N. rapporteur on North Korean human rights is a one-year renewable position. A maximum of six terms can be served.
