Europe Delays Vote on FTA Safeguards

The European Parliament has again delayed legislative procedures to implement safeguard provisions of the South Korea-European Union free trade agreement (FTA).

According to a source Friday, the European Parliament (EU) indefinitely postponed a vote on a bill that would seek the implementation of the safeguard measures. Initially, the parliament was expected to vote on the bill during a plenary session next Wednesday.

The bill stipulates in detail how South Korea and the EU will implement safeguards and under what conditions.

The European Parliament has delayed a vote on the bill twice due to internal differences.

The FTA is scheduled to go into effect in July.
