A U.S. expert on Korean affairs says North Korea could attempt to carry out more provocations.
Victor Cha, the Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, released a report on North Korea's disclosure of uranium enrichment facilities and its attack on South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island.
Cha said that the possibility of more attacks and provocations from the North cannot be ruled out given Pyongyang’s recent belligerent behavior. He said that the time between North Korean provocations seems to be shrinking significantly with each incident.
Cha said the North’s pursuit of provocations could reflect growing instability in the North, the succession process, or a combination of the two.
Cha added that the North did not get the reaction it was hoping for from regional actors in response to the revelations of its nuclear program and that the North’s attack on Yeonpyeong may have been a result.
Victor Cha was the former Director for Asian Affairs at the White House's National Security Council.
