'China Opposed to NK Threat of Force'

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao says that China is against any threat of force by North Korea.

China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency is reporting that Wen made the comment during a visit with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Moscow.

The comment follows North Korea’s attack on South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island near the inter-Korean maritime border in the Yellow Sea on Tuesday.

According to Xinhua, Wen said that the current situation is complex and that all parties concerned should maintain restraint. He said the international community should do more to ease the ongoing tension.

Wen emphasized that resuming the six-party denuclearization talks is fundamental to ensuring stability on the Korean Peninsula and dismantling North Korea’s nuclear program.

Medvedev was also quoted in the report as saying that Russia supports the resumption of the six-party talks in order to maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. He expressed hope that North Korea would communicate with China through bilateral and multilateral channels to that end.
