U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara have agreed to urge China to exercise its influence on North Korea to halt future provocations in relation to the North's recent artillery attack on South Korea's Yeongpyeong Island in the Yellow Sea.

Japan's Kyodo News Agency on Thursday reported that Clinton and Maehara reached the agreement in a telephone call.

Clinton and Maehara also agreed to maintain their close cooperation with South Korea and to seek a trilateral foreign ministers' meeting next month in Washington.

Meanwhile, Maehara on Wednesday called in Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cheng Yonghua and asked China to urge the North to halt further provocations to ease tension on the Korean Peninsula.
