Russia Asks Koreas Not to Endanger Lives

Russia is asking that the two Koreas avoid any acts that put people’s lives in danger.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the remark to reporters Thursday in regards to the current military tension between the two Koreas.

Lavrov said that the firing of artillery between the two Koreas has happened in the past, but has been limited.

He said that information preceded the latest incident that North Korea had asked South Korea not to conduct military drills in the area near the inter-Korean maritime border at the time the North launched an artillery attack on the South’s Yeonpyeong Island.

He said it is one thing to shell waters and another to shell land and residential areas, adding that people have died and that that is the main issue.

He called on the concerned parties to do everything possible to prevent such events in the future.

Lavrov said the U.N. Security Council’s permanent members are currently holding consultations to determine whether or not to call an emergency session of the council to address the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
