The Wall Street Journal says the South Korean stock exchange and the Korean won have bounced back quickly following North Korea’s artillery attack Tuesday on a South Korean island in the Yellow Sea.
In the article, "South Korea's Prosperity Defense," the journal credited President Lee Myung-bak's structural reform and economic policies for the nation’s market stability.
The article said North Korea's unprovoked attack Tuesday on South Korean civilians is causing justifiable consternation among leaders in Seoul, Tokyo, Washington and perhaps Beijing. But the journal said that the attack did not seriously rattle investors.
The journal said investors have come to expect periodic belligerence from the North and have grown immune to North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's attempted threats owing to favorable investment conditions fostered by Seoul.
