Japan Likely to Delay Ratification of Return of Ancient Books

The Japanese parliament is unlikely to ratify during the current session the return of ancient Korean books Japan took from the Korean Peninsula under colonial rule.

Japan's Mainichi Shimbun Daily reported Friday that the ongoing extraordinary parliamentary session is unlikely to ratify the return of the books due to confrontation between rival parties.

The paper said that the extraordinary session is set to end next Friday, but that the House of Representatives has yet to launch deliberation on the matter.

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said in a statement in August that Tokyo will soon return ancient books and cultural assets that his country took from the Korean Peninsula during the colonial period.
