The first ethnic Korean mayor has been elected in Latin America over 100 years after Korean immigration to the region began.

The South Korean Embassy in Peru says 64-year-old Jung Heung-won was sworn in on Sunday as the mayor of Chanchamayo city, 300 kilometers east of capital Lima.

Known as "Mario Jung" to the locals, he was elected to the four-year post in October when he defeated the incumbent mayor.

Jung immigrated to Peru 15 years ago. He's been in the restaurant and bottled water businesses and is known for helping the destitute.
