S.Korean Destroyer to Arrive at Pirate Hijack Site Mon.

A South Korean naval vessel will arrive as early as Monday night (local time) at the site where a South Korean chemical freighter was hijacked on Saturday, apparently by Somali pirates.

The Cheonghae Unit's “Choi Young” destroyer says the location of the “Samho Jewelry” in the Arabian Sea has been confirmed, as has the safety of the 21-member crew.

The 45-hundred-ton destroyer deployed just last month is moving in the direction of the hijacked freighter.

An official from the South Korean government says that to ensure the safety of the crew members, there is no plan to carry out a rescue operation at this point. He said that the destroyer will monitor the situation closely.
The freighter was carrying chemicals from the United Arab Emirates to Sri Lanka.

The South Korean government, meanwhile, says it will convene on Monday a meeting with ship industry officials to discuss stronger security measures and guidelines.
