Doctors in Oman say the South Korean captain of a hijacked ship that was rescued Friday is in need of a blood transfusion after he was shot during the rescue operation.
Captain Seok Hae-kyun underwent surgery over the weekend, as he was suffering from an excessive loss of blood, two broken legs and a broken arm following the South Korean military’s rescue of the “Samho Jewelry” freighter in the Arabian Sea from Somali pirates.
The doctors in Oman where the captain is being treated say that Seok is in need of a blood platelet transfusion and that it would be best if Koreans were able to donate the blood due to their similar blood structure. The doctors have asked for the cooperation of South Korean Foreign Ministry officials dispatched to Oman.
Three military officers who transported the captain to the hospital have offered to donate their blood, as well as South Korean businesspeople and journalists in the area.
