The military has made public the video footage of the rescue operation for a South Korean freighter that was hijacked by Somali pirates and was being held in the Arabian Sea.

The rescue operation, codenamed “Daybreak,” began early in the morning last Friday with the firing of tracer ammunition by South Korean soldiers in the Cheonghae Unit who were aboard the 45-hundred-ton “Choi Young” destroyer.

With the support of special forces, the 15-member rescue team got aboard the hijacked ship only six minutes after the operation began.

During the rescue, eight of the Somali pirates were shot and killed, including their captain, while five others were taken hostage during the four-hour-14-minute operation.

The South Korean military mobilized just one destroyer and one helicopter for the rescue.
