Libya has unveiled plans to compensate the South Korean companies that suffered damage at construction sites in Libya during rioting in the African nation.
A Foreign Ministry official said Monday that the Korean Embassy in Tripoli and Libyan government officials are negotiating on the compensation issue.
Libyans raided four construction sites operated by South Korean companies on January 14th and 15th, causing property losses of 45 billion won and setting fire to vehicles and facilities.
The raiders have withdrawn from three out of the four construction sites. However, some 100 continue to remain in the fourth construction site located in northeastern Libya.
Quoting a source from the International Contractors’ Association of Korea, media reports say “the incidents in which residents illegally occupied housing under construction in Libya cannot be construed as antigovernment demonstrations or organized violence resulting from anti-Korean sentiment.”
