S.Korean Troops, Aid Team Move into New Base in Afghanistan

South Korea has completed the six-month construction of a base in Afghanistan for a South Korean provincial reconstruction team (PRT) and the troops who protect them.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul announced on Tuesday that South Korea’s “Ashena” unit has relocated to the base in Charikar in the northern Afghan province of Parwan.

The unit, comprised of about 340 troops, had been stationed at a U.S. base in Bagram since June of last year.

In addition to the unit, some 300 members of South Korea’s provincial reconstruction team are stationed at the new base. The PRT provides medical assistance and other services to the people of Parwan.
