Freighter Rescued from Pirates Arrives near Oman Port

A South Korean-operated freighter that was rescued from Somali pirates last Friday by the South Korean military is waiting to enter the Port of Muscat in Oman.

Seoul said Wednesday that it is negotiating with Oman to have the “Samho Jewelry” freighter, which is holding five captured pirates and the bodies of the eight pirates who were killed during the rescue operation, enter the port around Thursday. The ship is anchored in waters some 32 kilometers from Muscat.

A government official said that the Samho Jewelry arrived near the port on Sunday, escorted by South Korea’s 45-hundred-ton “Choi Young” destroyer.

Meanwhile, South Korean medical officials and the family of the Samho Jewelry’s captain, who was shot during the rescue operation, left for Oman on Tuesday and are expected to arrive in the Middle Eastern country on Wednesday.
