S.Korean Captain of Rescued Freighter in Critical State

The South Korean captain of a freighter rescued from Somali pirates last Friday is currently in critical condition.

Captain Seok Hae-kyun, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds during South Korea’s rescue operation for the “Samho Jewelry” freighter, is being treated in Oman.

A doctor from Ajou University Medical Center in Suwon was in attendance for a surgical operation performed on Seok on Wednesday. The doctor says the multiple gunshot wounds to the stomach have ruptured his organs and are causing severe inflammation.

Do to the worsening of his condition, Seok’s planned transfer to Seoul will likely be delayed.

A group of three doctors, including Lee, arrived at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital in Oman on Wednesday and took part in the second of two surgical operations.

The captain's wife and eldest son have also flown to Oman.
