S.Korean Freighter's Entry into Oman Port Delayed

The entry of a rescued South Korean freighter into a port in Oman is expected to be delayed.

The South Korean-operated “Samho Jewelry” was rescued last Friday from Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea by the South Korean military.

South Korea’s “Choi Young” destroyer, which led the rescue operation and is escorting the Samho Jewelry to Port Sultan Qaboos in Oman, had been expected to enter the port around 2 p.m. on Thursday, Korean time.

An official from the South Korean Defense Ministry said the delay is due to Oman’s policy of being a “clean state” and that it is reluctant to allow criminals, including pirates, within its borders.

The vessels hold the bodies of eight pirates who were killed during the rescue operation as well as five pirates who were captured alive.
