'Safe Rooms' for Crews on Ships to be Mandatory

Written: 2011-01-27 14:16:57Updated: 2011-01-27 18:25:48

South Korea will enact a law soon that will require the owners of commercial vessels operating in pirate-infested waters to establish “safe rooms” for their crew members.

The decision was one of multiple measures announced by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs on Thursday to prevent losses from pirate attacks.

The ships that sail in waters deemed susceptible to pirate hijackings will be required to install safe rooms with steel doors and oxygen tanks.

South Korea will also strongly recommend that ships deemed vulnerable to attacks have security personnel placed on aboard by the shipping companies.
