US Wants to See NK Take Responsibility for Provocations

The United States says it wants to see North Korea take responsibility for recent provocations during upcoming inter-Korean working-level military talks.

State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters Thursday that Washington would like to see North Korea take responsibility for recent provocations and address moves it has made to increase tensions in the region. Crowley said the U.S. will wait to see what happens in the talks between South and North Korea on February eleventh.

He made the comment after being asked if the U.S. supports Seoul’s position that a North Korean apology for the sinking of the “Cheonan” and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island is not a precondition for the resumption of the six-way nuclear talks.

Crowley also said the issue of the North’s uranium enrichment program is a matter that is being evaluated by the U.N. Security Council.
