'China Against UN Adoption of NK Uranium Report'

China seems to be opposing the adoption of a report on North Korea's uranium enrichment program as an official document at the United Nations.

The report was drafted by a panel of experts under the U.N. Security Council Sanctions against North Korea.

A South Korean official says that China is against the adoption of the report and it is also unwilling to refer the North's uranium enrichment issue to the U.N. Security Council.

The official says that if Beijing clings to this stance, discussions on referring the matter to the UNSC will be difficult.

The expert panel drafted a report late last month saying that North Korea came into possession of uranium enrichment facilities earlier than Iran, and has been developing a nuclear program for a considerable time. The report called for stronger sanctions on Pyongyang.

The adoption of the report as an official document requires unanimous agreement of all 15 UNSC member states.
