The South Korean trawler "Geummi 305," released by Somali pirates last week, is experiencing difficulties in sailing to the Kenyan port of Mombasa as the ship is navigating against the tide.
It is uncertain if the trawler will arrive at the port on Monday, Korea time, as was initially scheduled.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry made the announcement on Sunday, adding that the crew members of the Geummi, including Captain Kim Dae-geun, are known to be reporting worsening health conditions.
The trawler, hijacked in October of last year, was released by the pirates after they determined that the bankrupt owner of the ship was unlikely to pay any ransom demands. The crew of 43 includes two South Koreans.
However, an expert from Africa involved in garnering the ship’s release says that 50-thousand dollars was sent to Somalia to purchase food and medicine for the pirates.
After stopping in Kenya, the Korean sailors on the boat will get a simple health check and will continue on for South Korea.
