US Congress Wants to Link FTAs with Job Help Programs

The U.S. Congress is reportedly attempting to link a program that supports those left jobless by free trade agreements (FTA) with the ratification of the pending FTA between South Korea and the U.S.

The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program ended on Saturday and that some Democratic lawmakers will not vote for the trade deal with South Korea if the TAA is not renewed.

Moreover, the Republican Party reportedly said that it would agree to renew the TAA only if trade deals with South Korea, Panama and Colombia are passed through Congress simultaneously.

Prior to that, the White House said that it would send the trade pact with South Korea to Congress and has expressed hope that it will be passed by July first.
