Excavation activities have begun at the site of a former Japanese army surgical training school for the victims of Japan’s 731 biological warfare unit, which conducted experiments on living people during the Pacific War.

The school was the command post for the 731 unit.

Unit 731 conducted a range of atrocious experiments on humans such as injecting the cholera virus into prisoners of war in Manchuria.

In 1989, 100 pieces of human bone were found around the site including a skull containing drilled holes and arm and leg bones severed by a saw.

The excavation is the first investigation into the crimes of Unit 731 in the 66 years that followed the war.

The Tokyo government says the investigation will take about a month.

Japan has previously denied the human experiment allegations.
