Japan Prepped to Cool Reactor with Water Cannons

Japan is reportedly planning to use police water cannons to cool spent fuel rods at the Unit Four nuclear reactor at a Fukushima power plant.

Following last week’s earthquake and the resulting tsunami, the water pumped into a storage tank to cool the fuel rods was interrupted, resulting in the exposure of the fuel rods, raising concerns about radioactive leakages.

The water cannons are expected to be used to fill the water in the storage tanks to cool the overheated fuel rods.

Japan earlier dispatched a helicopter from its Self-Defense Forces to the site to drop water on the reactor, but the plan was scrapped due to excessive radiation levels.

Japanese authorities, who are also concerned about the lack of water to cool the Unit Three reactor, have begun dropping water via helicopter on the reactor.
