The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced Thursday that a South Korean special forces soldier stationed in the United Arab Emirates was accidentally shot by a fellow South Korean soldier on March sixth.
The JCS said a sergeant first class officer identified as Park accidentally shot a staff sergeant identified as Choe during a training exercise.
The JCS says Park was unaware that the cartridge was in his rifle at the time of the accident.
Choe was treated on-site and was then taken to a nearby civilian hospital in the eastern region of Al Ain where he underwent surgery. The JCS said Choe’s condition is not life-threatening.
South Korea dispatched some 130 special forces troops to the UAE in January to help train special forces there. The unit is called "Akh," which means "brother" in Arabic.
