1,000 Students Dead, Missing in Miyagi Prefecture

About one-thousand elementary, middle and high school students are reported dead or missing in Miyagi Prefecture, which was hit the hardest by the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami in Japan.

The Miyagi education office said on Tuesday that 53 students are dead and one-thousand-42 others went missing.

The death toll of student victims is highest in Ishinomaki city at 827, followed by Kesennuma city at 104.

Japan’s National Policy Agency says the official number of those reported dead or missing topped 21-thousand.
