KFDA Puts Agro Product Import Restrictions on Hold

The government will put on hold restrictions on imports of foods produced in regions near Fukushima, the site of a radiation leak.

The Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said that the amount of Japanese dairy products, vegetables, and fruits imported after the explosion of the nuclear power plant reactors in Fukushima is minimal. In addition, it cited the absence of food imports from the region owing to a ban on shipments of all agricultural products from Fukushima.

Agro product imports from areas near Fukushima during ten days from last Monday have turned out to be just one shipment of melons. Radioactive substances have not been detected on them.

In addition, although 61-tons of processed foods have been imported into Korea from near Fukushima during the same period, they were all processed on the ninth, which is before the radioactive leakage occurred. Analysts say, therefore, that there is no likelihood of radiation contamination.

However, the administration will step up monitoring of Japanese foods by augmenting the number of testing personnel and equipment. If the situation in Fukushima deteriorates, the administration will discuss import restrictions again.
