The government has expressed regret over Japan’s move to dump radioactive contaminated water from the quake-crippled Fukushima Number One nuclear power into the Pacific Ocean without giving prior notice on the matter to Seoul.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Cho Byung-jae told reporters on Tuesday that Seoul hopes Japan would provide an advanced warning on any events that could cause public concern to its neighboring countries.
Cho then noted that South Korea and Japan have an accord signed by their foreign ministers which vows to actively exchange information on Japan’s nuclear accidents.
He said the government will take necessary steps on the recent matter after fully reviewing whether Japan’s release of radioactive water constitutes a violation of the international law on the discharge of waste into the sea.
The spokesman stated that related government agencies are conducting an analysis on the possible amount of contaminated water that was discharged, when it was released and the movements of the ocean currents.
