S.Korea-China PMs Agree on Stronger Ties

South Korean Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik, who is on an official visit to China, held a meeting with his counterpart Wen Jiabao and exchanged opinions on a wide range of current bilateral issues, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

The two prime ministers agreed to exchange safety information during emergencies in regards nuclear power generation. This agreement was spurred by the radiation leak from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, which was damaged by a massive earthquake in March.

Also, the two nations have also agreed to seek stronger collaborative ties for safety in nuclear power generation, such as joint efforts to prevent the spread of radioactive substances.

On the situation in the Korean Peninsula, Kim asked China for help in facilitating North Korea’s sincere return to the negotiating table.

In response, Wen reportedly expressed his wishes for close communication for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, such as the resumption of the stalled six-party denuclearization talks.

Also discussed in-depth were efforts to create conditions conducive to pursuing a South Korea-China FTA and adding consulates in Dalian, China and Jeju Island, South Korea.
